The Musicians: (2011-2012)

Cam Martin (Soprano Cornet), inspired by his father who played trumpet in Germany, began playing trumpet in grade six. As a career musician with the Canadian Forces, Cam has performed full-time with The Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Band in Calgary, The Naden Band in the Canadian tropic, Victoria, and most recently The Royal Canadian Artillery Band in Edmonton. When not making music, Cam can be assumed to be hunting or fishing - his two favorite pastimes.

Dr. David Langor (Solo Cornet), a native of Newfoundland, has been playing in brass bands across Canada for almost 35 years. He joined the MCCB in late 2001 and has served as principal cornet since 2003. He currently serves as President of the MCCB Society. He is proud to be the husband of Suzanne (MCCB solo horn) and father of Stephen and Matthew. Dave is a senior scientist with the Canadian Forest Service, and in his spare time he is a Sunday School teacher, Cub leader and hockey coach.

A. Daniel Skepple, Jr. (Solo Cornet) Born in St. John’s, Antigua, Daniel Skepple, Jr. grew up in Kingston, Ontario. Growing up in Kingston Daniel attended The Kingston Citadel Corps of the Salvation Army where he developed his love and passion for music and cornet under the influence of Kenneth R. Moore, former Director of Music of the Canadian Forces Vimy Band and the RCMP Band.  Daniel also came under the influence of Bandmaster Jack Green of Belleville, Ontario and Bert Probert of the Vimy Band during his high school years.

Daniel is a 1983 graduate of the University of Ottawa with a degree in English with a minor in music performance.  Daniel studied with Robert Oades and  Eric Rupp while at the University Ottawa. Daniel is also a proud alumni of the Ceremonial Guard Band.   After graduation Daniel enrolled in the Canadian military as a musician, first posted to the School of Music in Victoria and eventually to his home town band the Vimy Band where he was a featured soloist and master of ceremonies with the band for 10 years.

Daniel has played with numerous Salvation Army bands, community brass and concert bands and orchestra’s in Canada and was also the Divisional Director of Music for the Salvation Army in Cleveland, Ohio where he lead the NEOSA Youth Band.  Daniel was previously a member of Millcreek from 2001 to 2003 shortly after moving to Edmonton in 2000 and returned to the band in 2006 for a second tour.  Currently Daniel is the Director of Music/ Conductor of Mission Hill Brass, a band he founded in 2005.

Suzanne Langor (Solo Horn) holds B.Mus (Wilfrid Laurier) and M.Mus (University of Alberta) degrees. She has performed on french horn and Vienna horn throughout Canada, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and has recorded two CD's with the Vienna Horn Ensemble. She is a freelance French hornist, teaches horn and piano, and is a member of the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia and 'Five Of A Kind' Brass Quintet. She has played tenor horn in numerous bands over the last 20 years. She is married to David and has two sons, Stephen and Matthew.

Jane de Caen (First Horn) grew up in Calgary playing piano and trumpet, and oblivious to the existence of tenor horns. She played trumpet with the Calgary Youth Orchestra where she met her future husband, Allan. After graduating with a B.Sc. (P.T.) from the University of Alberta, she worked in Calgary and Halifax as a pediatric physiotherapist. The family moved to Edmonton in 1994, after many moves in pursuit of Allan's specialty medical training. She is working on a master gardening certificate, and is the mother of three extremely busy children and a menagerie of beasts.

Carol Thurgood (2nd Horn)-Although originally a French horn player, Carol also enjoys playing the tenor horn in the Mill Creek Colliery Band. Carol teaches instrumental music with the public school system and is currently a doctoral candidate in the Education Faculty at the University of Alberta. Carol continues to play the French horn in the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia and has performed with the Edmonton Symphony, Grant MacEwan theatre orchestra, Alberta Philharmonic and the Concordia College Orchestra. She is married to Brian and they have 5 children and 4 grand-dogs.

Dr. Troy Turner (First Baritone) has enjoyed Brass Band music since discovering the Saskatoon Brass Band shortly after finishing high school. Although work has taken him away from the SBB, he has been able to keep up his interest in Edmonton, first by attending the North American Brass Band Association conference in 2001, and now playing with the MCCB. Troy supports his music habit by practicing Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Stephanie Woytkiw (2nd Baritone)

Dr. Chris Diaper (Solo Euphonium) As a teenager in England, Chris came to the conclusion that playing the euphonium was unlikely to pay the bills and decided to take up a career in chemistry. An unforeseen consequence of this decision occurred a decade later when he immigrated to Canada to work at the University of Alberta. Much to his surprise, he’s still in Edmonton seven years later and enjoying a double life as scientist and freelance musician.

Patricia Gauci (Euphonium) is a native of Vancouver. Patricia was new to brass banding when first asked to sub for MCCB in 2000. Previously her 30- something years of experience playing Baritone, Euphonium and Trombone was limited to various concert and marching bands, including five years as a professional musician with the Canadian Forces Vimy Band. She holds a B.Sc from the University of Alberta, and is currently a practicing registered dental hygienist.

Nancy Thornhill (First Trombone) started playing trombone at an early age in a Salvation Army band and credits her love of playing to the many fine musicians who inspired her along the way. She graduated from the University  of Ottawa in 1980 with a B. MUS and also studied trombone at the Conservatory of Quebec. Nancy has recently returned to Edmonton (July 2008) after living in Dubai, in the Middle East, where she taught music at an International School for 13 years. She now teaches music lessons from her home.

Dr. Hugh Semple (Second Trombone) wished to play trombone from the age of three, and waited eleven long years for his first opportunity in 1965. He discovered brass banding in 1993 in Saskatoon, where he played with the Saskatoon Brass Band for several years. He joined the MCCB in 2001. Hugh has also played in the Ritchie Trombone Choir for several years.”

Ken Pearce (Bass Trombone)

Dietmar Sedens (Bb Bass): Born in Edmonton, Dietmar's introduction to music began at age 6 with eight years of violin studies with Marlin Wolff (ESO), followed by two years of viola with Evan Verchomin (ESO). He always wanted to play trombone, and upon entering the band program at Strathcona Composite High School he chose the bass trombone. However, since there were no tuba players in band that year the band teacher gently "persuaded" him to double on the tuba. Thus began a life long love affair with the tuba! Dietmar has played tuba in the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia, church brass bands, and is enjoying his introduction to British brass banding with the MCCB.

Paul Buckingham (Eb Bass) Born and raised in the UK, Paul began learning the tuba at the age of 12 and has never looked back. After initially playing in brass and wind bands, he spent his university years playing with various amateur symphony orchestras in Durham and Sheffield. It was during this time that he discovered the beauty of orchestral tuba parts, which, although sparse in notes, are dense in value.

Paul's arrival in Canada in 2008, to take up an assistant professorship in mathematics at the University of Alberta, saw a return to the band scene. He is extremely happy to be a member of the Mill Creek Colliery Band and the Wednesday night Festival City Winds Band. Both always leave him with a smile on his face.

Grant Kemp (Bb Bass) has been playing brass for 12 years. Starting on the baritone he has since played the Euphonium, Trombone and Tuba. Grant first started playing 'brass band' music on the Euphonium and Trombone with band-mate Jane de Caen and past member John Farmer in brass quintet. He started with the MCCB in January 2005 on Bb tuba and has also played Tuba and Bass trombone in the University of Alberta's concert band and symphonic wind ensemble and with the 'Blow it Out Your Brass' quintet. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in biochemistry at the University of Alberta and loves making music in his spare time.

Drew Bowering (Eb Bass) first picked up the Tuba in the school band at age 12 very shortly after starting on Euphonium.  Within a very short time, he was encouraged to begin playing in the community as well as school.  He has studied tuba with Dennis Miller and Scott Whetham, and has taken lessons or masterclasses with Roger Bobo, John Griffiths, and Lance Nagels.  Drew currently plays with the MCCB and the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia, and by day is a systems analyst at NorQuest College.
